Letter to Harari Dear Yuval Harari, I am writing to invite you /introduce you to a group of (mostly young) people interested in the new technologies and political structure. They come from all over our planet and are shortly meeting in Cyprus with the object of constructing a novel architecture to support cooperation in groups working to solve a diversity of specific problems. Our approach will combine the expertise of young lawyers and tec-savy coders with an inspirational mythology - we are building the Hitchhiker’s Guide not to the Galaxy, but to the Future and have the official blessing of those entrusted with the legacy of Douglas Adams. You state in Nexus that: “The main argument of this book is that humankind gains enormous power by building large networks of cooperation, but the way these networks are built predisposes us to use that power unwisely. Our problem then is a network problem.” Nexus Prologue page xiv I include a list of the team leading the project and speakers already committed to take part. We would all very much welcome your support. Yours Dear all, I’m feeling a little nervous about my choice for our next meeting. I chose it because I feel it addresses something important - Harari himself says “My goal with this book is to provide a more accurate historical perspective on the AI revolution. “ Also his take on history (Big History I think it's called) is new to me and offers a fascinating perspective on a lot that is happening in our world today (Trump and populism for example). But I’m more than aware Nexus is perhaps heavy reading for Christmas and New Year! With that in mind I suggest that the parts you might find most interesting are: The Prologue (15 pages in my edition) Chapter 1 What is Information? (15 Pages) Chapter 2: Stories: Unlimited Connections (20 pages) Chapter 3: Documents: The Bite of the Paper Tigers (30 pages) Chapter 9: Democracies: Can we still hold a Conversation?: (40 pages) Chapter 10: Totalitarianism:All Power to the Algorithms (40 pages) Chapter 11: The Silicon Curtain: Global Empire or Global Split (30 pages) Even if you were only interested in reading a chapter or two I hope it would provide food for an interesting discussion!! Love and a Happy Christmas to all!! Moira
